Let’s Talk Dermabrasion

About Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is the removal of the outer layers of the skin with a high-speed rotary sanding wheel. This skin resurfacing procedure can improve the appearance of:

  • Creases around the mouth

  • Acne scars

  • Fine facial wrinkles

Unlike chemical peels or laser resurfacing, it cannot be used around the eyes.

The Procedure

For complete comfort during your dermabrasion procedure, anesthesia is administered in the form of a topical cream as well as a sedative for relaxation and pain management. Dr. Shafaie will gently remove the outermost layer of the skin using a motorized sanding tool. The head of this device is covered in diamond particles which safely abrade the skin to the desired depth, with the goal being a more even surface.

After treatment, your skin will be dressed with a soothing ointment and you will be given specific instructions for your post treatment skin care. For some patients, more than one dermabrasion procedure, staged several months apart, are needed for optimal results.

Recovery

Recovery varies by individual and by the depth of the dermabrasion performed. The initial swelling, redness and crusting may take a week or more to subside. During this period, any burning or discomfort can be managed with medication prescribed by Dr. Shafaie. Residual swelling, sensitivity and a bright pink appearance may continue for several weeks or even months. It is extremely important to follow the instructions for post-treatment care, as the new skin will be very sensitive for some time.
